Week beginning 16.10.23
And just like that, they have completed their first half term! I hope they have enjoyed their first weeks of school as much as I have! I have loved seeing their confidence grow and to see them begin to flourish here at Little Houghton. It was lovely to see so many of you at parents evening this week. I hope you all have a lovely week off, whether that be on holiday, parties or having a quiet week off! It will be needed for the next term where an extra excitement of Christmas is added in!
This week we have been:
- consolidating our learning of the sounds we have learnt, these are - s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r b h f l
- exploring more Percy the Park Keeper books
- writing the initial sounds in words
- practicing letter formation of new sounds
- beginning to write some cvc words - e.g. mum, kid, red
- playing dominoes
- to Church where the children enjoyed sharing their Harvest art work
- exploring Maths language like heavier/lighter/more/less
Phonics: we follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme which have a link for parents to access so you can see and hear the sounds that they are learning at the moment. The link is https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/ - the phase 2 sounds autumn 1 and we have learnt s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r h b f l so far :) Next term we move onto Autumn 2 sounds
The above link shows the letters and on the last column has the formation phrase to help them write the sounds :)

Nursery:
This week nursery children have been
- enjoying listening time - this week we finished the story 'Would You Rather' by John Burningham, looking at the verbs and nouns in the story. We looked at the poem The Big Green Crocodile and copies the actions.
- using the scales and using words such as heavier and lighter
- recognising numbers in the environment
- mark making in the role play area
Here is a link to some of the nursery rhymes that they have been singing during listening time, please feel free to practice these at home https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
Ways you can help at home:
-practicing name writing - with correct letter formation - this can be found on the Little Wandle link - I write their name in a light pen and then put a dot where they need to start writing, this seems to work well
-I have given everyone a letter formation booklet know to practice formation at home (If missed it it will be in their drawer)
-reading with your child
-practicing words with your child that they get once a week (only get new ones when secure with the ones they have)
-the picture below has some ways to explore Maths at home and when outside
Reading - I now read with children in small groups three times a week and they will have that book in their bag on a Friday to share with you confidently and will keep this book until the following Friday. Please keep their phonics book at home until the following Friday.
