Week beginning 16.01.23

What a busy week we have had! This week we have been learning about Chinese new year which is this Sunday. The children watched some clips of a child explaining how they celebrate Chinese new year, they loved seeing the costumes and the dragons! In class we had lots of different Chinese new year activities such as, lantern making, red envelope making, Chinese restaurant role play, blossom tree making it was great to see the children explore the culture. 

Some things we have enjoyed this week are:

  • exploring the ice outside 
  • using different loose parts to make their own worlds and using their amazing imagination 
  • using rice to mark make in the tuff tray 
  • creating with junk modelling 
  • painting 
Phonics:

This week I spent some time to see where there were some gaps in our phonics knowledge. I wanted to do this so I knew what sounds I needed to recap as I would not expect all children to be able to retain all the sounds that we have learnt so far. We did this in a fun way where the children pointed out the sound that I was saying and I made notes afterwards to see which sounds they could remember. I was so proud of how well they did and we will now spend some time consolidating the sounds we have learnt before moving on to any new sounds. Super work Reception :) 

Ways to help at home:
  • read with your child(ren) 3 times a week minimum
  • please encourage your child(ren) to point to the sounds/words as they read as this will help with their fluency
  • touch counting up to 20
  • one more and one less than a number
  • recognising numbers and writing them 
  • as you are at home and out and about talk about sounds you can see (e.g. I spy something with my little eye something sounding with c)
  • sounding out words with robot arms
  • picking words from their reading book for them to write, slowly sounding out the word for children to hear and write the sounds
  • practice their words 
  • practice letter formation 
  • practice name writing - capitals only at the beginning

Phonics - 
Below, is a link to a youtube video of the pure sounds, we have learnt up to oi. The video shows more, but there is no harm in the children seeing these as we will be moving onto soon.


A few reminders: 
  • please can you write in the reading records so we know if your child(ren) have read at home, when I am reading with the children I am looking for them to be able to read the book fluently. Of course they can still sound out the words but if they sounding out all of the sentence "Nok went to the shop" I would like them to repeat the sentence back without sounding out.
  • Don't forget to book in parents evening appointments 
Nursery - 

Nursery children have been enjoying their daily phonics sessions with Miss G where they are focusing on making noises with their body and playing some games. This week they enjoyed the noisy bear game where they had to guess which sound the bear had made and the monster game, these phonics games focused on making loud and quiet noises. They have also continued to practice recognising and writing their name. Nursery children have also been enjoying counting through songs using props to help them too.

Week beginning 5th February

Week beginning 5th February  This week despite the rain we have had a lovely week :) We have been busy in our Mantle sessions as we begin our work as Scientists on a secret dinosaur Island and will continue this next term. The children have enjoyed having free access to the art area which means they can pick what they want to create and what resources to use.  If anyone has any phonics or badger books at home anywhere please can you bring them back to school.  You may find that your child is bringing a phonics book that they have read before, this is because I have changed the reading groups. Please don't worry about this, even if they read a book they have read before it will help with fluency and their confidence. As when I have read with them this week, even if they have read the book before they still need to sound out some words so it is not too easy for them.  On Monday we will be watching Emma (Seth's Mum) plant a tree in our area, the children are very excite...

Week beginning 13th May

 Week beginning 13th May I was so sad to miss our school trip! But thanks to Mr Howard it all ran smoothly, and I was told that the children were amazing. I am sure they were tired when they got home! I hope to see you all very soon.  This week we have been:  In Phonics we been focusing on reading longer words, and practicing writing these every day too New tricky words in Phonics have been: out and today Nursery Listening time: blend from the box, new sound 'ff', recapping taught sounds, clapping out syllables.  Reception- In Maths we have been looking at shapes, and talking about their properties. Nursery - In Maths we have been looking at  continuing to look at 3D shapes Reception - In Drawing Club we have read 'Pirate Pete' which the children loved!
